Cindy has specialized in violence against women in both clinical settings as well as research roles, providing individual and group counseling over multiple roles for intimate partner violence and adult survivors of sexual violence since 2001.
Cindy was a research student at both University of Calgary and Dalhousie University in areas of Violence and Homelessness, and Ethics in Social Work Practice, specifically looking at ethics when working within circumstances of violence against women. Cindy has presented on Women, Violence and Homelessness at National and International symposiums and has had her independent research study published.
Cindy works from a feminist, anti-oppressive, user-centered, collaborative, relational trauma-therapy approach. She grounds her practice in a Neurobiological Understanding of Trauma, Mindfulness and Yoga-Based Trauma Therapeutic Approach for safety-building and grounding, as well as using tools such as EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and IFS for trauma reprocessing.
Cindy has almost 9 years counselling specifically women who have experienced either sexual trauma, intimate partner violence, or both. In addition to her degrees, she has taken numerous courses and workshops and additional counselling certifications specific to working with trauma impacted individuals.
She is a certified Trauma-Informed Yoga Therapist (Sundara) and an approved Overcoming Anxiety Facilitator.
She has completed her level 1 Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute), as well as EMDR Certification (Niagara Stress and Trauma Clinic).
Cindy has also completed workshops in the Therapeutic Spiral Model (Dr. Kate Hudgins), Shifting Abuse Related Internalizations (Dr. Sandra Wieland), and three levels of Trauma Training with Dr. Janina Fisher Boston Trauma Institute.
I have been working as a counsellor in the trauma field since 2001. I have spent most of my counselling career providing support, information, resources, and care to women in or leaving abusive relationships; as well as, providing support, grounding, and processing facilitation for survivors of sexual assault. I have done extensive cross-training in trauma therapy (you can check out some excerpts from my CV below).
The most important thing to me, in the work we would do together, is that you will feel safe, heard, valued, respected, not judged, and that you have options in your healing journey. Your therapeutic experience can be as individual as you!
